Riesling

Once the most highly prized of all white varieties, Riesling suffered a calamitous fall from grace in the latter half of the 20th century, thanks largely to the enormous quantity of insipid impersonators, going under such names as Liebfraumilch, Niersteiner etc.
Unfortunately, this has led to the general misconception that Rieslings are always "sweet."  The truth is that this wonderful variety produces styles ranging from racy, bone-dry wines to intensely luscious dessert wines, (see botrytis,) consistently having the ablilty to show particular site characters better than any other variety.
