While Pinot Noir's home is in Burgundy, producing some of the world's greatest wines, many burgundian winemakers claim they use it merely as a vehicle for expressing  terroir and certainly it has an uncanny ability to change character with only the smallest shift in location.  Unlike some other varieties however, it is extremely fussy about where it grows, needing very cool climates like Tasmania in which to produce it's best.  When it does, drinking it is more of a sensual than intellectual experience, encouraging more passionate, even romantic discourse than any other variety.  Tasmanians are no exception, committing more than 45% of all the state's plantings to the grape.
