Named from the property's history as a post office, the "Mail Run" is our Bordeaux blend, so called because of these varieties' origins in Bordeaux, arguably the most famous wine region in the world.  And what are they? 

CABERNET SAUVIGNON - producing wines with high colour and tannin and the ability to develop over long cellaring times.  In the cooler regions, it is sometimes accused of being "hollow," and is therefore often blended with...

MERLOT - Ripening a little earlier than Cabernet, Merlot typically produces softly textured wines which are lower in colour, tannin and acidity; perfect for filling out the hollow framework of Cabernet Sauvignon.

CABERNET FRANC - Too often considered the poorer cousin of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is less successful in Bordeaux than it is further north in the Loire Valley, where the cooler conditions suit it's slightly earlier ripening.  In fact, the lighter structure and earthy, spicy aromas are quite different from Cabernet Sauvignon's typical cassis flavours.

Generally speaking, Tasmania is too cool for consistent ripening of these varieties, relying on a few particular sites to provide the necessary conditions.  The top of the Coombend valley (coombe) is an effective sun-trap which, combined with our dry soils, provides just what is needed.
